Where it came from

Clear heart wine tank stock out of the decommissioning of the historic Alba Coast Winery, originally owned by Almaden. The tanks were built by the George Windler Co. of San Francisco and installed in the 1940s and 1950s. They stood indoors, air conditioned and impeccably maintained the entire time, which is why the wood came out of them in the condition it did.

All of it is old growth clear redwood, a mix of vertical and flat grain. The trees behind it stood for five hundred to two thousand years before they were cut, and that shows up as twenty to thirty or more growth rings per inch. Nothing planted today reaches that in our lifetime.

The floor boards came out of a circular arrangement, which is why they run random widths and lengths. On the staves, the end notch is deducted from the usable length.

Milled to your specification

We mill this to order rather than selling it off a shelf, for one reason: a wrong cut wastes wood that cannot be replaced. S3S starts at $32 per square foot. Tongue and groove, shiplap and custom profiles are quoted per job, and we can leave it in the raw if you want to mill it yourself. Before a saw touches it we want to know your total square footage, your wall or ceiling dimensions, the thickness and face you want, and when you need it.

Why this wood cannot be replaced

It is not harvested anymore. Commercial old growth redwood logging effectively ended decades ago. The material still in circulation exists only inside structures that are already standing, and this run came out of one of them.

New growth redwood is a different material. Fast grown, wide ringed, mostly sapwood: softer, less dimensionally stable, and far less rot resistant than the heartwood in these boards. It looks like redwood. It does not behave like this.

Installation

Milled paneling installs with 18-gauge finish nails or concealed fasteners through the tongue for a clean finished surface. A protective oil or clear finish is recommended depending on the application.
