Why this wood cannot be replaced

The trees are gone. The coast redwoods this lumber came from stood for five hundred to two thousand years before they were cut in the late 1800s and early 1900s. That kind of time produces grain no living tree can produce: twenty to thirty or more growth rings per inch, clear heart, dead straight vertical grain. A redwood planted today will not reach it in our lifetime, or our grandchildren’s.

It is not harvested anymore. Commercial old growth redwood logging effectively ended decades ago. The material still in circulation exists only inside buildings that are already standing. Every board we mill came out of a California structure put up roughly a century ago.

There is no reorder. When this run is gone we cannot call a supplier and get more. The next supply is whatever the next teardown yields, and that may be years away. We are holding approximately 2,500 square feet.

New growth redwood is a different material. Fast grown, wide ringed, mostly sapwood: softer, less dimensionally stable, and far less rot resistant than the heartwood in these boards. It looks like redwood. It does not behave like this.

Milled to your specification

We mill this to order rather than selling it off a shelf, for one reason: a wrong cut wastes wood that cannot be replaced. Before a saw touches it we want to know your total square footage, your wall or ceiling dimensions, the thickness and face you want, whether you need a specific grain selection, and when you need it.

Most projects run 3/4 inch thick. Tongue and groove is standard; other profiles are possible. Ask.

Where it came from

These boards were reclaimed from historic California structures: barns, agricultural buildings, and industrial buildings raised in the early 1900s, when old growth redwood was still ordinary construction lumber. The mill marks and nail holes are the record of that first life.

Installation

Install with 18-gauge finish nails or concealed fasteners through the tongue for a clean finished surface. A protective oil or clear finish is recommended depending on the application.
